April 24, 2006 - News Release - Western Nebraska Community College,
Scottsbluff, Wins Environmental Award
04/24/06 Lincoln, Neb. -- On April 13, 2006,
Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff was presented the
Nebraska Industrial Council on the Environment’s Environmental Award – Other
Organizations - during a ceremony held in Lincoln during the Nebraska
Safety Council’s Conference & Exposition.
Western Nebraska Community College is one of few
universities or colleges in the nation to develop an Environmental
Management System without bartering of fine reductions for violating
compliance of EPA regulations. One goal of an EMS is to minimize chances
of EPA compliance violation by closely monitoring and minimizing waste
generation through employee knowledge and accountability. By embracing
an EMS as encouraged by EPA, they are changing their environmental
culture from within and helping to increase environmental awareness to
the public in general.
With their EMS, the environmental footprint for WNCC
has decreased their resource consumption. Their future landscape water
and maintenance resources are being reduced as the xeriscaping projects
expand. Environmental awareness through educational classes and programs
and visual demonstrations of WNCC’s xeriscape to the public should
increase regional awareness as well. Once they get LEED certification
for a “green” residence hall, this too should increase environmental
awareness and create a positive impact for additional regional
environmental awareness projects such as programs for certification of
“green” home construction, etc. |
