OSHA issues Protective Guidelines for Biological Threats.

(OSHA Compliance Advisor, BLR, Nov.12, 2001)

Recommendations stress that mail should be opened carefully, with a minimum amount of movement, and using a letter opener or method that is least likely to disturb the contents.  The guidelines recommend that employees:

  • Not blow into envelopes

  • Not shake or pour out contents

  • Keep hands away from nose and mouth while opening mail

  • Always wash hands after handling mail.
