What To Do When Stopped by Law Enforcement By Tom Hunter, Scotts Bluff Co. Victim Witness Assistance Director

(The following recommendations are offered to maintain safety for you and the officer.  Be advised, the officer will perceive body motion and movement inside the vehicle as an act of aggression and will act accordingly to secure personal safety.)

  1. As soon as safe and practical, drive to the side of the road and activate hazard safety lights.

  2. Lower Driver's window.

  3. Remove Sunglasses.

  4. Turn Off the Radio.

  5. Stay Inside Your Vehicle.  Do Not attempt to exit your vehicle and do not remove seat belt.

  6. Keep Both hands on the Steering wheel.  Do not attempt to get registrations, license and insurance card until advised by officer.

  7. Advise Passengers to Remain Quiet and to keep their hands visible to the officer.

  8. If at Night, turn on inside dome light.  This allows the officer to observe the inside of the vehicle.

  9. Do Not Argue with the Officer.  Be pleasant and polite.  The place to argue is in court.

  10. Organize necessary cards.  (Insurance, registration, license)
